Schools to Re-Open
Re: Flooding of South Saskatchewan River

Update - Tuesday, June 25, 9:15 a.m.

Prairie Rose School Division has been closely monitoring the flooding situation along the South Saskatchewan River. With the river continuing to recede, arrangements are being made for classes to resume on Wednesday, June 26th. All previously closed schools within the Prairie Rose division will be re-opened and bussing transportation will be provided. The only school that will remain closed is Beyond Walls Outreach School, located in the evacuation zone in Medicine Hat. The re-opening of Beyond Walls will be coordinated along with city and emergency officials and students or staff should not return until notified.

In regards to diploma testing, Eagle Butte students with scheduled Diploma exams on Wednesday and Thursday have the option of writing the exam, be provided a school awarded mark, or may choose to write in August or at a later date. These options also apply to all other Eagle Butte exams that are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.

The remaining grade 9 Achievement tests will still be written as scheduled. If there is an extenuating circumstance where a student cannot write the Achievement test, parents should contact the school principal as soon as possible.

It is also important to note that extra-curricular trips away from the school are being considered on a case by case basis. The well-being and safety of students is our primary focus and additional activities will be approved with that in mind. Please check with your school for further details.

As the flooding continues to move downstream there may still be other areas of the division impacted by rising waters along the South Saskatchewan and Red Deer rivers. Those circumstances will be evaluated and decisions will be made at that time. If the flooding situation changes from now until Wednesday morning, information will be shared on the division website (www.prrd.ab.ca), through the local media and on twitter (@PrairieRoseSD8).

We understand that this has been a very difficult and emotional time for many people in our communities. We would like to thank our parents, staff and students for their cooperation and understanding.

Update - Sunday, June 23, 3:40 p.m.

Due to the impending closure of all bridges in the City of Medicine Hat, Prairie Rose School Division will be closing a number of schools for Monday June 24th and Tuesday June 25th.

Keeping in mind the safety of staff and students, I.F. Cox School, Parkside School, Margaret Wooding School, Ralston School, Seven Persons, Jenner School, Irvine School, Beyond Walls and Schuler School will be closed. Bussing transportation to all of these schools will not be available. Eagle Butte High School in Dunmore will be open to students who still wish to write their diploma exams, however no bussing will be provided. If a student is unable to make it to the school to write an exam, that student has the option of being provided a school awarded mark or may write their diploma exams in August or at a later date. Staff members are advised to check their division email folder for additional details pertaining to the school closures.

All other schools in the Prairie Rose School Division will remain open (Foremost School, Burdett School, Bow Island and Senator Gershaw School, Warren Peers School, Oyen Public School, South Central High School and New Brigden School) and bussing will be provided, where possible. As the flooding continues to move downstream there may be other areas of the division impacted by rising waters. Those circumstances will be evaluated and decisions will be made on a case by case basis.

Administration will re-evaluate the flooding situation on Tuesday afternoon and an update for parents, students and staff will be provided at that time.

Update - Sunday, June 23, 9:50 a.m.

As waters continue to rise along the South Saskatchewan River and Seven Persons Creek, Prairie Rose School Division will be closely monitoring the flooding situation. Any school closures or transportation routes that are affected as a result, will be posted on the division’s website, reported through the local media and shared on the flood twitter feed #mhflood and at @PrairieRoseSD8. Parents are asked to check back for regular updates and details.

The Beyond Walls Outreach School in Medicine Hat will be closed on Monday. Any students who are scheduled to write diploma exams should NOT try to access the school. Students will be contacted with further details once they are available.

Other students and staff will be impacted based on ongoing bridge closures. It may not be possible for some students to travel to their schools to write their examinations. Should that be the case, there are options for students that will be communicated in a future update.

The division understands that this is a very difficult time for many of our staff, students, parents and communities who are affected by this disaster. Decisions regarding any possible education changes will be carefully considered based upon what is safe for all involved.

Sincerely,

Doug Nicholls
